Audition sides with curse words can throw even seasoned actors off balance.

Can I Change the Language During an Audition?

Dear Ms. Wisdom,

I had an audition last week, and the script included a line with language I wasn’t comfortable saying — an f-word. I decided to swap it out in the moment, but afterward, I started wondering if that was the wrong choice. Are actors allowed to change the language in an audition when the line includes cursing, or does that make us look unprofessional?

Dear Choosing My Words,

A few years ago, Casting Director Lori Wyman addressed this exact question during one of her Business Hour sessions for actors. Her advice was clear: language is a question for the Casting Director. Some auditions require actors to be “word-perfect,” and the text must be delivered exactly as written. In others, there can be room for adjustment. The only way to know is to ask — usually through your agent, who can check directly with casting, or through a note if the submission portal allows it.

When the language genuinely conflicts with your values, you still have options. You can submit your take with the change and include a short note explaining why, or you can politely decline the audition. Either choice is professional when handled with respect and communication.

As Lori Wyman said, some roles simply won’t be for you, and that is perfectly fine. Your integrity matters as much as your craft. If you are morally opposed to something about the role – language or otherwise, honor your choice to walk away from this one opportunity to audition. You do not need to compromise your values to prove your commitment to acting.
