Understanding SAG-AFTRA

Screen Actors Guild and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) is the largest union representing professional artists in the entertainment industry. It was formed in 2012 when the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists merged.

SAG-AFTRA protects performers’ rights including compensation for:

  • performances,
  • residual income,
  • protection from discrimination, and
  • inclusion in the collective bargaining process.

The union also provides:

  • access to health insurance,
  • pension benefits, and
  • other resources for its members.

Through its various contracts, SAG-AFTRA works to ensure that its members are treated fairly, have resources to help them become successful, and are able to continue to do their work. After analyzing these benefits, an actor may have a good idea of when is the best time for joining SAG-AFTRA.

Benefits of Joining SAG-AFTRA

Apart from the security of knowing you are part of a support network, SAG-AFTRA membership also provides members with:

  • exclusive access to industry-related information,
  • performers’ resources,
  • member benefits,
  • member discounts, and
  • other special opportunities.

Since its establishment in 1952, the performer’s union has fought for better wages, benefits, and working conditions for its members. That fighting spirit still continues today with an ever-growing list of members and allies. SAG-AFTRA members are offered:

  • discounted health care plans,
  • a death and disability insurance program, and
  • pension plans to help support them long after their careers have ended.

Additionally, SAG-AFTRA members have access to:

  • performance practice videos,
  • online production contracts,
  • advice from industry experts, and
  • networking and career-building opportunities.

The union also helps members find work, as well as represents them when it comes to collective bargaining and labor disputes. By joining SAG-AFTRA, you can be sure that you are making an investment in your career. It is a valuable resource to have for any actor and could help them to reach the heights of success.

Join SAG-AFTRA: Eligibility

Joining SAG-AFTRA is a great way to kickstart a career in the entertainment industry. To qualify, you must be a professional actor or performer who meets the requirements of the union. To be eligible, you must demonstrate professional credits in at least two of the following categories: motion pictures, television, industrial and educational films, commercials, radio, voiceovers, new media, and other approved activities. Additionally, you must be able to work as a performer legally in the United States or Canada. In order to maintain eligibility, you must maintain an active performance resume and fulfill basic membership requirements, including paying union dues.

When you play a speaking role (“principal”) in a SAG-AFTRA production, you will be invited to join the union. That is what the law calls “Taft-Hartley.” You can also audition for SAG-AFTRA jobs, even when you are not a union member. Auditioning for SAG-AFTRA roles before you join means that if you get that job, you will become eligible to join the union due to “Taft-Hartley.” Finally, you can collect SAG-AFTRA vouchers on set, and qualify that way. What Is The Best Time To Join?

When you join SAG-AFTRA, a few things happen, such as:

  • Your validation as an actor gets a boost.
  • The Union status adds value to your resume.
  • You finally get treated – and paid – more fairly.

As a Union member, you are now part of a competitive pool that has access to better auditions for more desirable roles. For those reasons, many actors prioritize joining SAG-AFTRA as soon as possible.

Disadvantages of Joining SAG-AFTRA Prematurely

There are disadvantages to joining SAG-AFTRA too soon. When you are not yet at the same level as the actors you are about to compete with, you may sabotage your own chances of success by joining. Ideally, you should build strong resume credits and pursue solid training before considering joining. As a non-union actor, the competition for roles is not as strong, and you can build your credits that way.

Joining the union can be a great way for actors to further their careers by offering additional protections and opportunities. That being said, understanding the requirements and benefits of joining SAG-AFTRA is important for making a decision that is best for an actor’s individual career. It is important for aspiring actors to be mindful of their level of experience before joining SAG-AFTRA. While the union offers protection to union members, it also carries the burden of high competition and decreased chances of success for those who have not established themselves before joining.

Actors who are not yet prepared should:

  • pursue strong resume credits with indie productions
  • get good training to build the foundation and strength of their craft before committing to the union.

By doing so, non-union actors can increase their chances of success in the union and have a better chance at success in the industry. You should consider joining SAG-AFTRA carefully, as it will be a major influence on your acting career’s future.

Conclusion

Every actor can be successful in the industry. But the journey starts with building the necessary foundation and strength to stand out in the competition. Ultimately, actors must make the decision for themselves as to when they are ready to join SAG-AFTRA. With careful consideration and training, joining can be a major step in the actor’s career journey.

The decision to join SAG-AFTRA is not one you should take lightly. After all, jumping into the competition too soon could backfire. It is important to amass adequate resume credit, receive proper training, and build up both your skills and confidence before you venture into the union. By starting as a non-union actor, you can create a strong foundation and establish yourself on a higher level before you take that leap. Then, when you join the union, you can do so with confidence, secure in the knowledge that you’re ready for the challenge.
